History of Chiropractic
Chiropractic is a cutting edge science. Although, the first pictures depicting spinal adjustments were discovered in prehistoric cave paintings in Port le Merd in southwestern France. These early records date back to 17,500 B.C. We know the Greek papyruses from 1500 B.C. gave directions for solving lower-back problems by maneuvering the legs. We also know that the ancient Japanese, Egyptians, Tibetans and Hindus all used spinal adjustments.
D.D. Palmer discovered the concept of specific spinal adjustments. His son B.J. Palmer later developed the modern philosophy and art of chiropractic, as we know it today. On Sept 18, 1895, D.D. performed his first adjustment on a man who had been deaf for seventeen years. The man's hearing returned. Over the months to follow, patients came to Palmer with a variety of problems including headaches, stomach complaints, epilepsy, and heart conditions. Palmer would soon use the term chiropractic from the Greek words, chiro, meaning hand and practice, meaning practice of operation.
